Wash day plan
A plain-language outline of a simple wash day. Adjust it to your own hair and the directions on your products.
- 1
Detangle first
Brush or comb dry hair gently, starting at the ends and working up. Less tangling means less pulling in the shower.
Check the label: Tool or product directions
- 2
Wet and shampoo
Wet hair well with comfortably warm water. Use the amount the directions suggest, mostly on the scalp, and massage with fingertips.
Check the label: Directions: amount and how often
- 3
Rinse thoroughly
Rinse until the water runs clear and the hair no longer feels slippery. Leftover product can make hair feel heavy.
Check the label: Warnings: eyes and skin
- 4
Condition the lengths
Apply conditioner mainly from mid-lengths to ends, as directed, and leave it for the time the label suggests.
Check the label: Directions: leave-on time
- 5
Dry kindly
Squeeze out water with a soft towel. Let hair air dry partway, and use the lowest heat setting that gets the job done.
Check the label: Tool manual: heat settings
